a syrian refugee’s journey to a new life
“If had stayed in Syria in the war I would have been in the army now. Out somewhere fighting, holding my gun and shooting my own people.”
After two years of hardship in Istanbul, Syrian Ziad Al-Taha, 27, desired more for his future. Al-Taha was one of hundreds of thousands of refugees that crossed the sea on a raft from Turkey to Greece and continued to Europe via the Western Balkan land route. In 2015 more than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe.
“I understand the public fear. People are afraid for their economies, for their security, for the culture change. I totally understand this and I respect this, but is this more important than saving human lives?”
